Our brain is made up of our conscious mind and our subconscious mind. The conscious mind is in the present, analysing, thinking, running our day by directing our immediate attention to its environment. Our subconscious mind is like a giant memory bank with unlimited capacity. It stores past memories - the good and the bad, holding onto emotions and beliefs.

Hypnotherapy takes place when a qualified therapist guides their client into a deep state of focus and relaxation, using verbal suggestions with repetition, imagery and metaphors. When you are under hypnosis, you are not asleep (which is often assumed) and you are in control of your actions. This level of concentration and focus quietens your conscious mind enabling you to ignore any distractions. 

 

With guidance from the therapist, you are now able to delve into your subconscious mind where your thoughts, beliefs, emotions, memories, perceptions and behaviours originated and on hearing new suggestions can modify or replace those stored thoughts and behaviours.
